The Best Workout Split for Busy Women (It's Not the One You Think)

The Best Workout Split for Busy Women (It's Not the One You Think)

You keep hunting for the perfect workout split. The right number of days, the right number of meals, the strategy that finally makes you consistent. In this episode I explain why that search is the exact thing keeping you stuck, and why the real answer has almost nothing to do with your discipline.

I won the biggest bodybuilding competition in the world, the Olympia, 14 years ago, training five to six hours a day, six and seven days a week. My whole life revolved around it. Now I run a few businesses, work 60 to 70 hours a week, and spend my weekends on soccer fields while my husband coaches three sports. If I tried to run that old plan today, I would fail, and it would have nothing to do with laziness. That gap between the plan that once worked and the life you have now is what this whole episode is about.

I get into the in-person trainer conversation that flipped a woman's entire "I just need more accountability" story on its head, the "more is better" trap that hits high achievers the hardest, and the one study on 53 women that names the real reason consistency falls apart. By the end you will stop asking what is wrong with you and start asking a much better question.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why the perfect workout split is a fallacy that keeps you stuck
  • How social media has you optimizing a strategy that was never built for your life
  • The in-person trainer story that proves more structure is not the fix
  • Why a lack of motivation is a symptom, not a character flaw
  • The "more is better" trap that high achievers fall into hardest
  • Why fitness has no finish line the way a launch or a degree does
  • What a study of 53 women aged 40 to 62 revealed about staying consistent
  • How to build a plan around the life you actually have right now

Press play for the full breakdown, and if it lands, come find me and let me help you build a plan that actually holds through the life you have right now.

The Best Workout Split for Busy Women (It's Not the One You Think)

THE OLYMPIA VERSUS NOW

Fourteen years ago I trained five to six hours a day, six and seven days a week, to win the Olympia, and my whole life revolved around it. Today I run a few businesses, work 60 to 70 hours a week, and spend my weekends on soccer fields while my husband coaches three sports. If I tried to run that old regimen now, I would fail, and that has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with the season I am in.

THE OPTIMIZATION TRAP

We are living in a world of constant optimization, and most of us are optimizing strategies that were shady to begin with. Social media sells you the perfect split, the perfect meal count, the perfect everything, but the real answer is quieter than that. The best split is the one you can show up for consistently, and I know that does not sound clickbaity enough to go viral.

THE IN-PERSON TRAINER MYTH

A woman told me she was sure she needed an in-person trainer to stay motivated and accountable, then admitted her biggest challenge was constant travel and the shame spiral that followed every trip. Adding a trainer's schedule to an already overloaded life was never going to solve a consistency problem that flares up specifically when she is away. The beautiful plan does not matter if it does not fit the life she actually lives.

WHY IT'S NEVER A MOTIVATION PROBLEM

The lack of motivation and the lack of consistency are byproducts of a strategy that does not work, not personality flaws. You can build the most gorgeous program in the world, and if it ignores the ups and downs of your real week, you will not stick to it. That is not a matter of if it fails, it is a matter of when.

THE MORE IS BETTER TRAP

High performers and former athletes get hit by this the hardest because more effort usually equals more results in a career, a business, or a degree. But fitness does not work that way and it does not have a finish line, so pushing endlessly is not a strategy, it is a setup. When the intensity becomes impossible to sustain, the shame and the all-or-nothing cycle move in.

WOULD YOU CALL A CHAMPION LAZY?

When an accomplished woman tells me she is lazy, I ask if she would call an Olympia champion lazy, or inconsistent, or undisciplined, and the answer is always an immediate no. She has just as many accomplishments proving she does not have a motivation problem. You do not need to be hyped up to show up for work you are good at, and the same logic applies to a plan that actually fits.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

A study of 53 women between the ages of 40 and 62 found that the most common barrier to sticking with exercise was not a lack of time or menopausal symptoms. It was the disruption to daily structure and the competing demands of that life stage. That is the entire conversation in one finding: the plan has to work with the life you have, not the life you wish you had.

FIX THE PLAN, NOT YOURSELF

I would much rather see you go all in three days a week, rain or shine, than commit to six and show up once out of shame. The agency here is not trying harder, it is looking honestly at whether your plan matches this season and changing the plan while keeping the goal. Stop questioning your character and start questioning the cookie cutter program, because I can almost guarantee the problem is the plan, not you.
