Your Questions Answered: Coaching, Body Image, Kids, and Why You Are Not as Special as You Think

Your Questions Answered: Coaching, Body Image, Kids, and Why You Are Not as Special as You Think

Our members sent in their questions and Coach Jen and I answered all of them - the way we actually talk about these things behind the scenes.

In this Unfiltered and Unscripted Q&A episode we cover four questions from inside the Powerhouse Academy community that ended up going much deeper than anyone probably expected. What started as a conversation about coaching turned into a conversation about why women stay stuck, why your kids are watching everything you do, why you are not as unique as you think, and what coaches should be saying a lot more honestly.

This one covers a lot of ground. If you have been waiting for permission to finally put yourself first - this is it.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What our favorite and least favorite parts of coaching actually are
  • The call that had me still angry the next day - and why
  • How to stay consistent when your spouse loves last minute plans
  • Why you are not as special as you think and why that is great news
  • How to talk to your kids about body image - and why what you do matters more than what you say
  • Why women spend on everything else but cannot justify spending on themselves
  • What coaches should be talking about far more honestly
  • What your kids are absorbing from watching you hide in photos and avoid vacations

You cannot keep the same lifestyle and expect a different outcome. And you cannot slap something on top of an unchanged foundation and call it a solution. This episode gets into all of it.

Your Questions Answered: Coaching, Body Image, Kids, and Why You Are Not as Special as You Think

INTRODUCTION

I introduce the format for this episode - a Q&A segment where members of the Powerhouse Academy submitted questions for both Coach Jen and me to answer. Jen asks me the question, I answer, then Jen answers the same question. I note upfront that if I sound angry at any point it is because I know what is possible for women and watching them not take the leap genuinely frustrates me. Jen kindly reframes it as passionate.

QUESTION ONE: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE PARTS OF COACHING

My favorite part of coaching is watching the transformation beyond the physical - seeing women unlock areas of their lives they had been settling in, elevating themselves, cutting ties with people who do not respect their boundaries, asking for the pay increase, improving their marriages. Jen's favorite part is the relationships and the trickle-down effect on children when our members succeed. My daughter told me two days ago that she could tell I love what I do - and that said everything.

THE LEAST FAVORITE PART

My least favorite part is the flip side - knowing how much potential someone has and watching them not be able to see it for themselves. I share the story of a 50-year-old pre-diabetic who lost both parents to heart conditions, knew exactly what was coming, spoke to a member whose life had completely changed since joining, and still could not take the leap. It was not financial. It was a lack of belief in herself. That kind of conversation stays with me. Jen adds that her least favorite part is wanting it more for someone than they want it for themselves.

WHAT WE WISH COACHES TALKED ABOUT MORE HONESTLY

I wish coaches talked more honestly about the difference between reaching the goal and maintaining it. Everybody sells the transformation. Nobody talks about the fact that what got you there will not keep you there and that maintenance is where the real behavioral work begins. Fitness and nutrition are not static - life keeps changing and the strategy has to change with it. Jen adds that coaches need to speak more honestly about the mental and emotional seasons of life and how your state will directly dictate whether you can hold the goal you have worked for.

QUESTION TWO: HOW TO HANDLE A SPONTANEOUS SPOUSE

Jen leads with practical advice - trust yourself enough to make good choices in any environment, follow every cocktail with water, order the grilled chicken, do not overthink it, and then have a proactive conversation with your spouse about planning ahead so you can prepare. I come in harder - my first question would be whether this is actually a practical problem or a communication and relationship problem. Money and fitness are the two things I most commonly see used as proxies for deeper friction within a marriage. The husband in this case is not sabotaging anyone - he is doing what they have always done because she has always gone along with it. If she is going along at the cost of her own peace, that is worth looking at honestly.

QUESTION THREE: ARE WE ALL MORE ALIKE THAN WE THINK

I open respectfully and clearly - no, you are not that special, and that is actually wonderful news. The physiology is consistent. The behavioral patterns are consistent. A calorie deficit still works. Consistency still beats perfection every single time. Everybody is busy in their own perception of busy. The differences between women are practical - lifestyle, schedule, travel, family situation - and with the right guidance those differences are far simpler to address than people make them. Jen adds that the key question is not what is different about you but what are other people doing that you are not willing to do.

QUESTION FOUR: HOW DO YOU TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT BODY IMAGE AND FOOD

Jen opens with real passion - you do not talk to your kids about body image and food, you display the behavior you want them to live by. She describes the toxic trends she is seeing between mothers and daughters around celebrating six-pack abs, restrictive diets, and hours of cardio as measurements of worth. I add the other side - the generation of mothers who know that negative commentary is harmful so they overcorrect by speaking only positively about their daughter's body while still hiding in photos, avoiding vacations, and displaying every sign of hating their own. Children have eyes. What you do will always outweigh what you say.

THE INVESTMENT CONVERSATION

I share two stories. A woman who will not go to her kids' games because she does not want to wear shorts and is not sure she will book the summer vacation - but has two children in private school and travel sports and cannot justify spending on herself. And a woman who told me verbatim that she feels so miserable in her body that she has to step away from the dinner table and go outside to cry - and still did not join because she could not justify spending that much on herself. The foundation of the home is the parent. Throwing money at everything else while neglecting that foundation does not add up.

CLOSING

Jen closes by restating the question that captures the whole episode: what are other people doing that you are not willing to do? I wrap by reminding listeners that you cannot keep the same lifestyle and expect a different outcome. We preview that more Q&A episodes are coming and invite listeners to send in questions via Instagram and the community chat.
