The BS Coaches You Need To Unfollow NOW

The BS Coaches You Need To Unfollow NOW

Do you follow health and fitness "experts" who use fancy words that leave you more confused than before you started scrolling their page? I'm so sick of coaches who make their audience feel dumb AF and complicate things when they're probably clueless as hell themselves. If you're listening to these so-called coaches and fitness gurus, it's time to hit that unfollow button.

In this episode, I'm talking about why these "expert" coaches are really just a load of bullshit. You'll learn why these types of coaches are sabotaging your results and what you should actually be looking for, so you can successfully reach your goals in a way that works for you.

Topics Covered:

  • The importance of having a coach that meets you where you're at (instead of making things so damn complicated!)
  • How these coaches are causing you to fail
  • Why those fancy words don't make someone an expert
  • What causes the false sense of expertise in our industry
  • The type of coach you really need for success
  • Why you need to simplify your health and fitness strategy

How many "experts" are you unfollowing after listening to this?! Message me on Instagram to let me know, and while you're there, tell me what topics you want to hear more about or who I should have on the show.

The unedited podcast transcript for this episode of the Unfiltered Fit Life podcast follows

Hello, hello there, fam. Welcome to another episode of the Unfiltered Fit Life Podcast. I am Natalia Mello, your host, and today we’re diving into a big pet peeve of mine: fitness coaches. Specifically, those in the fitness, health, and wellness space who make their clients feel dumb just to keep them dependent.

Thank You for the Support
Before we dive into today’s topic, I want to thank you all for the incredible messages congratulating me on the launch of Embody Supplements. Starting this brand has been a dream, and we’ve launched with one of the best pre-workouts I’ve ever tried: Energy Explosion.

Testimonials for Energy Explosion
To give you an idea of how others feel about it, here are a couple of testimonials from members of the Powerhouse Academy:

  • Carrie: “I tried Natalia's new pre-workout today, and what a game changer. My workout was fire.”
  • Another review: “I was skeptical to try this because most pre-workouts make me feel amped up, then I crash before lunch and need more caffeine. This was a whole different experience—no jitters, no crash, and I had energy the rest of the day. Five stars.”

I’ll save a few more reviews for next time, but until the end of September, you have the chance to win a free Energy Explosion! Simply leave a review for the podcast, screenshot it, and send it to me on Instagram. Every week, we’ll pick a winner!

The Problem with Overcomplicating Fitness
Now, let’s talk about today’s topic. Something that frustrates me as a coach is seeing fitness professionals overcomplicate things. Many use complex terminology or advanced techniques to make themselves appear smarter, but this approach often alienates the people they’re supposed to help.

An Example from My Experience
A trainer once approached me about putting his client on a carb-cycling plan. His client was already struggling with the basics, like tracking food or following a meal plan. Why introduce something as complex as carb cycling when they haven’t mastered foundational habits?

The Importance of Mastering the Basics
Fitness isn’t about flashy trends or advanced methods. For most people, it’s about consistency and doing the basics well. Coaches should meet clients where they are and create plans that fit their lives. Small, manageable changes lead to sustainable progress.

Professional Athletes vs. Everyday Clients
The strategies used for professional athletes or competitors don’t apply to busy moms, corporate professionals, or anyone just trying to feel confident and healthy. Yet, many fitness events or resources focus on these advanced techniques, confusing the general population.

For example, while nutrient timing or electrolytes might matter to someone training for the Olympics, they’re irrelevant for someone working out three times a week in their garage. Coaches should focus on what’s practical and effective for their clients.

Focusing on the 5% vs. the 95%
Too often, fitness professionals obsess over minor details—like whether cardio should come before or after weightlifting—while neglecting the bigger picture. For most people, consistency matters far more than these details. Obsessing over the small stuff can overwhelm clients, leading them to give up entirely.

Overcomplication in the Industry
Many fitness professionals use jargon like “cellular level changes” or “resetting your body” without truly understanding what those terms mean. This creates confusion and gives clients a false sense of expertise.

As a coach, my job is to simplify the process, make it manageable, and teach you the skills you need for long-term success. Complicating things only creates barriers.

Breaking Down My Coaching Philosophy
Here’s how I approach coaching:

  1. Simplify the Process: Fitness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I aim to make it as simple as possible for you.
  2. Focus on the Basics: If you haven’t mastered the basics, there’s no need to obsess over advanced techniques.
  3. Empower Clients to Make Choices: I don’t tell my clients what they can or can’t do. Instead, I teach them how to make informed decisions that align with their goals.

The “Eat Every 3 Hours” Myth
Many outdated fitness myths—like eating every three hours to “speed up metabolism”—persist in the industry. These rules often don’t fit real-life situations, like someone with a busy schedule or a job that doesn’t allow frequent breaks. Instead of rigid rules, focus on what works for you.

Fasted Cardio and Other Debunked Trends
Similarly, the idea that fasted cardio is “superior” has been debunked. If someone feels dizzy doing cardio on an empty stomach, they’re better off doing it later in the day. The timing doesn’t matter nearly as much as simply getting it done.

The Bigger Issue in the Fitness Industry
This overcomplication creates confusion and division in the fitness space. Clients are left bouncing between conflicting advice, feeling overwhelmed, and ultimately giving up. It’s time to cut the nonsense and focus on straightforward, effective strategies.

My Role as a Coach
I’m not here to babysit adults or micromanage your choices. My job is to educate and empower you so you can make decisions that align with your goals—whether that’s eating pizza or skipping a workout.

Thank you so much for listening to today’s episode. Remember to leave a review for a chance to win a free Energy Explosion and stay tuned for details on an exciting new challenge I’ll announce in the next episode.

See you later—bye!
