Taking Care of Yourself IS Taking Care of Your Kids

As a mom, you have a lot of hats to wear. You take on the roles of cook, maid, nurse, chauffeur, referee, and many, many more. When you plan days out, more often than not it’s storytime at the library or a trip to the playground. And when you have some extra money to spend, it’s often on clothes, toys, or accessories for your baby or child. There’s no doubt that mothers do a lot for their children, and that’s part of what makes moms amazing. But that doesn’t mean you need to live a life of sacrifice and selflessness till your kids move out. It’s very important to set aside time for things you want to do for yourself. It can be hard not to feel guilty at first, but once you see what a positive change “me time” has on you, you’ll know that it ultimately benefits everyone in the family!

What Should You Do?

What makes you, YOU? I bet since becoming a mom you’ve found it harder to make time for yourself. Between cleaning and bath time, homework and bedtime stories, there isn’t much time to do things just for yourself. Have you ever stopped to think, though, that if you just carved out some time during the day for yourself, you’d have time to do those things that made you happy pre-baby?

It doesn’t even have to be anything big. Leave the kids with dad or drop them off at grandma’s house for an hour, and go get your nails done or a new haircut. You don’t even have to leave the house. Read a book, or take a bubble bath. Whatever makes you happy. Hey, even a few minutes in peace to eat a slice of cake with some coffee once in a while will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged! When it comes to thinking about what you’d like to do for yourself, think about what leaves you feeling rejuvenated,

Don’t Feel Guilty!

The importance of me-time can not be overstressed, but many moms feel a sense of guilt when they take time to themselves. Think about it, in the past women had multiple extended family members around ready to lend a helping hand, be it with cooking, cleaning, or the kids. These days we don’t have that regular day-to-day help, so we need to carve that time out for ourselves, and should not feel bad! A happy you means a happy family. If you’re overworked and overstressed, of course some of that tension will inevitably spill over into your family life. That leads to stress, less patience with your children, shortness with your spouse, and more negativity overall. The benefits of “me time” are numerous. You will come back with a renewed sense of patience, and you’ll probably miss your kids too! And it leaves you feeling ready to tackle whatever life (or the baby) throws at you!
